Contaminations (2012-2013)
Contaminations recombines details from 18th- and 19th Century porcelain paintings and textile designs, medieval bestiaries, Chinoiserie imagery, Javanese batik patterns, and fragments from Dutch maps into a large-scale drawing that explores visual residue of the colonial enterprise to seek moments of cultural cross-contamination. Dense with detail, these drawings are over-saturated with information. Colors and patterns clash, forced to inhabit the same space. Meticulously constructed, each drawing is the result of months of intensive drawing and copying.
