Projects 2012-2021 > Contaminations (2012-2013)

Contaminations recombines details from 18th- and 19th Century porcelain paintings and textile designs, medieval bestiaries, Chinoiserie imagery, Javanese batik patterns, and fragments from Dutch maps into a large-scale drawing that explores visual residue of the colonial enterprise to seek moments of cultural cross-contamination. Dense with detail, these drawings are over-saturated with information. Colors and patterns clash, forced to inhabit the same space. Meticulously constructed, each drawing is the result of months of intensive drawing and copying.

I am interested in printed pictures – both on paper and on cloth – and in how the popularity of particular patterns and images that circulate at a given time reflects narratives of colonialism, conquest, cultural appropriation and hybridity.
